The short answer
GDSense 1.4.0 adds an in-editor updater. Choose Update now in the update banner, review the offered version and release notes, and confirm installation. Restart Godot to load the new scripts. Keep a project backup before updating; the browser download remains available.
Install an update
Save your work and commit or back up the project. Choose Update now, review the version and download size, then choose Install. The plugin checks the download and signed archive before replacing the addon. If verification fails, stop and read the error; do not bypass it.
When installation finishes, restart Godot. The new scripts load after restart. Settings and your API key under user:// are separate from the addon files.
When to use the browser download
If no signed update is available or in-editor installation is unavailable, use Download update to open the account download page. Close Godot, replace the entire res://addons/gdsense directory with the downloaded addon, and reopen the project. Do not merge old and new addon files.
Source checkouts, symlinked addon directories, and read-only projects may require a manual installation. Requires Godot 4.3 or later; an update can declare its own minimum editor version.
Restore from Settings
If GDSense still loads, open its Settings and choose Restore previous GDSense version. Review the offered previous version, confirm Restore, then restart Godot to load the restored addon. If no previous version is available, read the reported reason and use your own project backup if needed.
Settings also includes Enable in-plugin updates. Use it to control whether you can install updates inside the editor.
Restore the previous addon manually
If Godot cannot load the new plugin, close the editor before restoring files. Find the project user-data folder: Project → Open User Data Folder opens the location represented by user://. If the editor cannot open the project, locate that same project data folder through your file manager.
Inside user://gdsense_backup/<previous version>/, plugin.cfg sits directly inside the version folder. Copy that folder somewhere safe first. Remove the failed project addons/gdsense folder and copy the contents of the previous-version folder into addons/gdsense so plugin.cfg sits directly inside addons/gdsense. Reopen Godot and enable GDSense under Project → Project Settings → Plugins if needed.
Backups are local to this project. Older version folders and a rollback-safety folder can remain under user://gdsense_backup; do not assume only one backup exists or use rollback-safety as the previous-version folder without checking its contents. If the intended backup is missing or unusable, install a known working release from your own backup. Do not copy user-data credentials into the project or commit them.
